I wrote down my 2015 goals in my journal which is currently sitting in Istanbul while I am in across the Atlantic.
My list went something like this:
Take two or three Turkish classes (CHECK!)
Finish the Old Testament (Fail)
Learn to drive stick (Fail.. EVERY year…)
Take my phone out less during church (Questionable)
Make Mom teach my something new (CHECK!)
Run the 5K in the Istanbul Marathon (1/2 Check. I walked the 10K)
…That’s all I remember off the top of my head right now, but I know it was lengthier than that.
There weren’t too many monumental moments for me personally this year, but I’m very pleased with completing my first year as an overseas teacher, finishing my first of three Orff levels over the summer, keeping this blog (only had one entry in 2014), learning to crochet (just this week while I’ve been sick), and my travels.
New Countries/Territories in 2015: Egypt, Hong Kong, Ukraine
Countries Revisited in 2015: Netherlands, Austria, Hungary
Running Tally: United States, Germany, France, Austria, Italy, Scotland, Czech Republic, Denmark, Switzerland, England, Spain, Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Lichtenstein, Vatican City, Monaco, Malta, Hungary, Greece, Turkey, Canada, Israel, Jordan, UAE, Egypt, Hong Kong, Ukraine…
My travels weren’t nearly as extensive this year as they were for many of my colleagues or even compared to when I was a student abroad, but I enjoyed with what I did and was still able to fly back to the States twice to visit my family.
One of the biggest personal challenges for me this year was, again, being far from my family at a time when I felt I was needed. I know it was a tough year from my family, and, in a way, I feel like I wasn’t a part of any of it. I was too far removed to truly help.
So what’s in store for 2016?
Learn to drive stick (this will be the year…)
Professional Development: Orff Level 2 course
Travel to five new places: India, Australia, and the Balkans.
Visit Cappaddocia, Van, Konya, and Gaziantep in Turkey

Happy New Year, everyone!
