An Offering to the Sea

Blue Cruise from Fethiye to Olympos: 20-23 June 2015

The last evening aboard our gullet, several of the Blue Cruises anchored in the area gathered together for a party. A sea disco, if you will. Discos and drinking are not my scene, so I sent Elisabeth on her way with my blessing. In the middle of the night, I went back to our cabin to use the WC. Elisabeth had just returned. “You’re back,” I said with a smile through my yawn. “Did you have fun?”

“Mmhmm,” Elisabeth replied. Not much of a chatterbox, that one…

I returned to the deck and she appeared a while later. She climbed up only to grab her pillow before disappearing again. I thought, “Hmm… she must be sleeping in the cabin tonight.” But then she climbed back up next to me in the early hours of the morning.

“I can’t find my bra…” Elisabeth informed me quietly at our last breakfast.

“Did you…” I asked subtlely.

Elisabeth nodded. On the first day, Elisabeth had called dibs on a tall, tan, sea gypsy working on our gullet. Turks aren’t generally her type, so I was surprised, but he was beautiful… But then I think nearly all Turks are beautiful. They seem to be my kryptonite. She had said, “Do you think he’d have sex with me?” Alex and I replied, “Of course. This is Turkey. You’re foriegn. It’s that easy.” Elisabeth couldn’t believe it.

“Where?” I couldn’t help but wonder. On the last night, Elisabeth got exactly what she wanted.

Her eyes gestured towards the bench behind the far corner of the table where a family was now sitting enjoying their meal.

I raised my eyebrows and tried to mask my laughter. “Maybe it’s under the cushions? “Did you only pack one?” I asked.

“Yes… I’m pretty sure it’s in the sea…”

“Oh no! Well, it’s early. The water is still… It couldn’t have floated that far… Should we go for a swim?” I suggested.

“No… let it be my offering to the sea…” Elisabeth replied contently. “Every year when we return to this very spot, we will offer her one
black 36D.”

When we returned to the cabin, Elisabeth’s bra was on her suitcase. “I don’t understand… I know I had it on last night… But I didn’t have it on when I got up this morning…”

I interrupted, “I bet your sea gypsy returned it to you.” Elisabeth smiled and put her hands to her heart.

We said our farewells to the crew and prepared to board our bus to Olympos. At that moment, I realized I left my pants on the deck. I took them off before my morning dip, but I didn’t put them back on. I had grabbed my towel instead. “Oh no! I left my pants! I LOVE those pants! I have two pairs, but still! I hike in them, sleep in them, go to the gym in them…”

Elisabeth looked to the water and said, “Then they were certainly a worthy sacrifice.” The sea had treated us well. She only deserved the best from us. May she accept our offering until Blue Cruise 2016.
